Meet Your Doctor:

John V Horberg, MD

John V. Horberg, M.D.

Dr. Horberg is a fellowship-trained Orthopedic Surgeon specializing in Adult Reconstructive Surgery including hip, knee, and shoulder replacement. In fact, he is currently the only fellowship-trained joint replacement specialist in Wyoming.

The importance of sub-specialization cannot be understated. We live in a time of incredible and rapidly changing medical advancement. While many orthopaedic surgeons perform joint replacements as a small part of their practice, the data is quite clear: patients have better outcomes when they have their joint replacement performed by a fellowship trained sub-specialist. It is Dr. Horberg’s mission to serve the people of Wyoming and provide them with most cutting edge joint replacement available.

Background

Dr. Horberg grew up outside a small farming community in central Illinois. He spent most of his youth playing sports, hunting, fishing and working on the family farm. He has always had a particular passion for the outdoors and has tried to spend as much time outside as possible since he was young.

Dr. Horberg met his wife as a freshman at Augustana college. Originally from Sheridan WY, she shares his love of the outdoors, especially the mountains. They enjoy hiking, rock climbing, mountain biking, snowboarding, camping, hunting and fishing together. They share their love of the outdoors with their two daughters, Ingrid and Anja. Dr. and Mrs. Horberg are excited to raise their children in Laramie.

Education

After college, Dr. Horberg earned his medical degree from Southern Illinois University School of Medicine in Springfield, Illinois. Following medical school, Dr. Horberg was accepted into the Orthopedic Surgery residency at Southern Illinois University where he trained for an additional five years before graduating. Rather than enter general practice immediately following residency, Dr. Horberg chose to sub-specialize in Adult Reconstructive Surgery. He completed his fellowship at the Virginia Tech Carillion School of Medicine under Dr. Joseph Moskal who is widely recognized as one of the world’s leading experts on the minimally invasive direct anterior approach for total hip arthroplasty.

After completing his training, Dr. Horberg went into practice as a joint replacement specialist in Springfield, IL. He served as an Associate Professor in Orthopaedic Surgery and Adult Reconstruction at his alma mater, training medical students, residents and fellows. While the decision to leave academic medicine at his home program was difficult, the opportunity to join the outstanding surgeons at Premier Bone and Joint Centers and move to Wyoming was too good to pass up. Dr. Horberg and his family could not be more happy to have settled down in Laramie, Wyoming.

Passion

Dr. Horberg is incredibly passionate about the use of the minimally invasive, Direct Anterior Approach for hip replacement surgery. This approach helps speed recovery, limit post-surgical discomfort, and minimize the risk of complications following hip replacement. Dr. Horberg is an expert in the use of the direct anterior approach for all hip replacement cases including complex deformities and revisions. He has published research on the topic and presented his research at national and international academic meetings.

Dr. Horberg regularly travels around the United States to teach other surgeons how to perform the Direct Anterior Approach.

Dr. Horberg is also an advocate for the use of robotics, live intra-operative x-ray, and other cutting-edge technologies. He has been an early adopter of robotic technology and uses it extensively in his practice. In light of this experience, Dr. Horberg is also often asked to help teach other surgeons around the country how to perform robotic joint replacement surgery.

Philosophy of Care

Dr. Horberg recognizes that mobility is a precious gift that we often take for granted until we start to lose it. As an Orthopedic Surgeon and a joint replacement specialist, he is dedicated to helping his patients live more active, pain free lives. He makes it his mission to understand each patient’s unique problems, perspectives, and goals and to provide them with the cutting-edge, compassionate care they deserve. He is here to help you get back to doing what you love.

Choosing to undergoing joint replacement surgery is a major decision. Dr. Horberg and his team recognize this and will do everything in our power to make your experience a positive one. Joint replacement is a team sport and we are in it together.
